If the character survives this, they continue to the ship’s deck, on which they encountered an infamous Kraekan known as The Unspeakable Deep. However, the ship is attacked by Marauders and its entire crew is killed. The game opens with the playable character (which can be customized before starting) being on a ship that is on destination to another land in which a princess is to be married to its king, averting war. Gameplay is centered around Sanctuaries and shrines. Players go from area to area, typically defeating the enemies in it whose salt can then be used for various purposes and continuing to the next after its main boss has been defeated. It has several RPG elements, such as a leveling system and a large variety of weapons and armors. It’s a decent combat system and feels very fluid once you familiarize yourself with the controls and Castlevania series. In most of the boss fights, using it this way is pretty much required to prevail. The dodge roll gives you complete invulnerability while you’re rolling, and it allows you to pass through enemies. You got regular attacks, heavy attacks, and a dodge roll. Although it is a sidescroller, the game takes much inspiration from the Dark Souls Vigil: The Longest NightĬombat is solid and copies a lot of mechanics from Dark Souls, too. The game also provides a local multiplayer option for co-operative and versus play, and asynchronous features such as messages that may be interchanged between players. The game implements RPG concepts such as origins, classes and stat development, as well as an extensive skill tree providing hundreds of combinations. Magic and ranged attacks can also be performed. Players can wield two handed weapons for additional power, and shields to defend and parry. There are 600 items players may use, and the several weapon categories have special movesets including air attacks. The game features 2D hand drawn visuals, as well as gameplay mechanics similar to the Souls series. which allows players to heal and act like checkpoints.
There are a lot of “Aah, so *this* is where this leads to!” moments as you finally get to open a passage that has been locked for half the game by arriving from the other side. But unlike most Metroidvanias, there is no map so you have to rely on your own sense of direction. The levels of the game are interconnected like in a Metroidvania. Good game, highly recommended if you like soulslikes and metroidvanias. Create a character, explore an island inhabited by dark creatures, and defeat difficult bosses.
